2012 RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY

Pinot Noir

Tasting Notes

Aromas of brandy-macerated red cherries, bay laurel, duck fat, forest floor, toasty baking spices and warm vanilla. The chewy red and black fruits come through in the mouth with layers of fine tannins and just a whisper of smoldering French oak. A delicious finish ends this wine on a lush note of creme brulee topped with plum compote.

Vineyards

Blending this year’s Picket Fence Pinot Noir was a treat as we truly had a bounty of riches to choose from in the cellar. Our vineyards up and down the Russian River appellation yielded barrel lots that had deep color and were richly flavored. I put together a blend from Silk Ranch, Lambert Vineyard and our critically-acclaimed Wohler Vineyard, which showcases ripe cherry aromas paired with brooding deep, earthy flavors.

Fermentation & Aging

The grapes were brought into the winery, sorted for quality and gently destemmed. After a brief cold soak, they were stainless steel-fermented for about 12 days, then gently pressed. I chose a combination of about 40% new French oak and 60% neutral French oak in order to highlight the fruit characters from the vineyards. We stirred our lots monthly to develop mouthfeel and silkiness then bottled before the next harvest.
